Beschreibung Laguna Torre - Cerro Torre 3102 Meters - Parque Nacional Los Glaciares - El Chalten - Argentina

Mythos Cerro Torre! First time seen by Gringos in 1782 from Antonio Viedma. 1834 Fitz Roy and Charles Darwin see it as well from far away. First men to actually be in the area was Perito Moreno. He called the higher of both towers Fitz Roy.

In 1959 Cesare Maestri and Toni Egger climbed the Cerro Torre first. However, this ascent is a mystery. Toni Egger died on the descent. His camera got never found. Also not a single proof of there work in the wall was ever found above 300m from the glacier. Several times other climbers tried their route in the past. Only in November 2005 it finally got repeated. According to lot of climbers this route is the hardest on the Torre. It is hard to believe that Maestri and Egger were able to do it with their old fashion gear in 1959. But why should somebody lie for so long?

The hike up to the Laguna Torre is straight forward and well marked. If you wanna see a possible sunrise you could camp at the Cerro Torre base camp just underneath the Laguna. Keep in mind that the weather at the Torre is one of the worst you can find on the planet.
